Prof Arnold Schoonwinkel

Vice-Rector and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Learning and Teaching, Stellenbosch University

Arnold Schoonwinkel graduated with a Master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Stellenbosch University in 1981, and a PhD in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Stanford University in 1988. He also completed an MBA at the University of Cape Town in 1993.

He worked in the petrochemical process control and aerospace industries for 15 years, before commencing an academic career at Stellenbosch University as applied research professor in satellite engineering, followed by 10 years as Dean of the Engineering. He serves as Vice-rector (Learning and Teaching) since 2012, responsible for holistic student development and support systems, academic programme development and hybrid Higher Education delivery using pedagogically sound applications of information and communications technology.
